RD1 '18: Demons vs Wildcats (W.Prem)

Mitch "Boxy" Skelly | 02.05.18

Wandsworth Demons 7.5 (47) def. West London Wildcats 0.1 (1)

Following the brilliant start to the day by our Conference side the Prem girls were fired up to continue the winning trend. From the outset our midfield was provided great service by Crofty in the ruck; B, Trucker and Steve all capitalising on her exquisite tap work. The forward line looked lively, Nom Fimano continuing her preseason form, and Buckets providing a strong target deep in the square and Sharky tackling anything that moved. Up 4 goals to nil at ¼ time the main objective was to keep playing our style of footy and know that the result will come.

After ¼ time scoring became a little harder with the Wildcats dropping an extra player into their defence, however this allowed our own half back line of Keatchy, Mad Dog Murphy and the super silky Tomb Raider to dominate. Tomb Raiders 40m spear pass of 1 step would have been the best bit of skill shown all day, however that honour should go to Buckets who slotted one home from the boundary line in front of a vocal home crowd. Porta was having a great game on the wing, and Gnat was doing everything possible to keep things going our way, even putting her nose on the line to smother a kick from point blank range.

Up by 6 goals at half time, the team set a goal to keep our opposition scoreless and focus on maintaining team structures. We managed to put an early goal on the board, however the Wildcats started to surge forward and did manage to score their first behind. With the scores on 7.4 to 0.1 things were looking good before a big collision occurred involving Keatchy. Our brilliant physio team of Mickey and Screech were on hand to take control of the situation, and the sensible decision was made to call the game off early whilst the ambulance was called. Most importantly there was no serious injury after the scans were done, and we’ve come away with a handy 4 points from round 1.

As well as our 4 wins on the field it made me really happy to be part of such a supportive and united club. All day the teams were helping each other out and barracking from the side-lines, that’s what London footy is all about. Fingers crossed we’ll have a nice day for round 2 and we’ll see even more Demons on the Common enjoying a couple of froths and getting around each other… #FILTFC
