Michael 'Pitto' Pitman | 25.05.16

Wandsworth Demons 10.4 (64) def. by South East London Giants 9.12 (66)

2 points! So close! I thought we were gonna stumble over the line with this one but it just wasn’t to be!

Looking back at it, we lost the game in the first and last ten minutes of the game. Kicking in to the breeze in the first quarter we came out napping and the Giants came out all guns blazing kicking some early goals before we stemmed the flow and then started to produce some goals of our own. We ended up going in even at the first break, which with a three goal breeze was not ideal.  We knew we had our work cut out in the second quarter trying to minimize the wind advantage of the Giants. I thought the backline after the first 10 minutes of the game really started to gel and work really well as a unit. It took a bit of discipline and some unselfish football for them to lock their opponents down. Shakey, who was one of the best on grounds for the threes the week before, got a call up to the magoos, and played really well in the backline. The backline mainstays of Fulton and Sharpley were solid again.  The coaches can’t ask anything more of Conor, with four great games in the magoos. He keeps playing selfless footy always beating his man and killing the ball whenever it comes it to the backline.

The second quarter saw the Demons play some better football, working hard in to the breeze we came in to the main break only a couple of goals behind.

They don’t call it the premiership quarter for nothing, we knew the third quarter was either gonna make or break us! Ki started the second half coming out of the goal square and provided a much needed target which was missing in the first half. Yet again Skelly, Hank and Casa played great games feeding the ball out of the packs and working the ball forwards at every opportunity. Bambi was outstanding in the ruck clearly dominating the taps however this didn’t really convert to clearances for the demons and is something we need to work on moving forward. Jeez the boys came out firing and played some really exciting football in the third quarter which resulted us heading in to the last quarter 14 points ahead.

We knew it was going to be tough to defend the 14 point margin kicking in to the breeze in the last quarter. To the boys credit they played lockdown football and despite the ball spending the majority of the last quarter in the back half, the Giants were unable to convert this on the scoreboard. The last ten minutes saw some silly errors by the Demons lead to Giant’s goals. The margin crept closer and in the last few minutes the Giants kicked a goal to go 2 points ahead. This proved too difficult to claw back and resulted in the second loss of the season for the magoos.

I think we will go away from this game licking our wounds but hungrier going in to the second half of the season. I think at our best we can take on any team however there is still a lot to work on to get there! Good effort lads!

Goals: Shaun Martin 2, Casa 2, Ki 1, M. Skelly 1, Thommo 1, Hank 1, Shakey 1, Candy 1
