It was a hard fought win for the Men’s Prem’s on the weekend, getting the chocolates over the greatly improved Hawks by 5 points. The boys were up against it before the ball had even bounced, having 19 changes to the side from the previous week. This brought about a sense of excitement to the group, with so many new faces involved that will only compliment the side going forward.

The game started well, with Tom “Pig” Shaw on fire early kicking a few sausage rolls on the back of some great midfield ball movement from the likes of Brayden Irving, Nick Dundon and Brayd’s mate Michael Debenham, who was on loan to us from Melbourne for the weekend.

We were against the breeze in the second quarter and the Hawks were able to claw their way back into the game. Pig moved into the ruck and stopped some of the Hawks momentum as we headed into the main break with a slight lead.

The second half played out a little like the first, however we weren’t able to covert some of our good work into majors. Going into the last term, the Hawks kept coming and coming and thanks to some Sam “Eddie Betts pocket” O’Brien magic from the boundary, as well as a big last quarter and crucial goal to Ryan McMinn, the boys were able to get the win.

Brayden Irving and Michael Debenham were super all day through the midfield, racking up plenty of touches and also hitting the scoreboard with 2 goals each.

After losing the ever reliable Stew Williams to an old mans “calf injury” early, Nick Dundon moved to half back and provided the boys with some drive. Aaron Boatfield held down the key defensive post well, while Pig was the difference in the game, kicking early goals and moving into the ruck to play a great team role.

Another huge effort for the day came from the Dee’s new cult hero Tommy Lowe. Playing his first game of Aussie Rules Football, Tommy showed great pace, toughness and ability to find the ball in space, killing a few players on his way to a massive debut game win!

It was great to get the win against the Hawks who were primed to try and knock us off on the day with an inexperienced side. Now we set our sites towards the Wildcats 2’s team, who no doubt will be wanting to do the same as the Hawks with hopefully the same result! Carn’ the Dee’s!

Goals: T.Shaw 4, B.Irving 2, M. Debenham 2, R.Luvara 1, S.O’Brien 1
