Round 2 - SheDees v Lions

David Jordan | 16.07.21

Dees 10.9.69 - Lions 0

A fantastic team effort from the Shedees Premiership team saw them record a 69-0 win against the reigning 2019 champs, the North London Lions.

Playing against the hill in the first quarter, the Dees built momentum early, with Cass winning a bunch of hit outs and Nools, Longy and Lic working really well in congestion to hit up our wings, Rogle and Jess Calam, in space. The team used these outlets really well to work the ball up the field and get clean inside 50s. This was rewarded with 3 well worked goals, Rogle in particular playing some excellent footy hitting our tall leading targets on the half-forward line Amber and Scod. We’d struggled to get clean inside 50s against the Swans the previous week, but the girls worked hard on it at training, and were rewarded, with Kelsy and Sam snagging sausage rolls through their movement - leading hard and into space from inside the goalsquare.

Now playing to the typical scoring end at Bounds Green, the Dees kept their foot on the accelerator, Hux coming into the game with her typical flair and playing some really nice football, and Gemma applying heaps of pressure and laying a bunch of tackles. The wings were continuing to work well for us, and our small forwards Cayne and Sarah were getting to the contest well, running onto the ball and getting shots off at goal. Meanwhile our backline, ably led by Prip at centre-half back, were repelling everything thrown at them and hitting targets when called upon. After two games without conceding a point, Aileen remains on kick-in duties without being called upon, much to her disappointment!

The second half proceeded in much the same vein as the first - Longy took a spell upfront and gobbled up a bunch of possession, snagging herself a goal and a couple of assists, while Lic hit a beaut of an inside 50 up to Kelsy in the 3rd resulting in her hitting the scoreboard again.

The fourth quarter saw Cass take a spell upfront with Prip coming into ruck (and pretending that she wasn’t pleased about it) winning a bunch of forward moving hit outs, and Bek taking over at centre-half back. With Nools effectively marshalling the wall, as she had throughout the game, the ball remained in the Lions forward 50 for much of the last 15. Our efficiency wasn’t quite as good in the final Q, going 0.6 after 10.3 previously, but that failed to put any dampeners on a fine team performance.

It really was a great watch, and the Lions couldn’t handle the Shedees run and carry. Big shout out to Tay, Aileen, Kate Rum, Prip and Bek who played their part in continuing the Dees fine streak of not conceding a point yet across two league games and a friendly. On to our biggest game of the year so far against the undefeated Cats this Saturday.
