Super 3's vs Reading Roos

Tim Maguire | 26.07.21

With the threat of thunderstorms in the air, and a spot in the grand final on the line, Saturday the 24th of July was just the sort of day you live for when inducted into the Super 3's brethren. Yes, some of our stalwarts had been stolen by the conference, but with the wind flowing through Libba's lengthy locks, the team that is the heart and soul of the Wandsworth Demons strode out onto Clapham Common with one thing in their mind. To claim the victory against the Reading Roos that would move them one step closer to immortality!

Having sourced a pair of footy boots just minutes before the bounce, big Matty Bromham was throw straight into the ruck, and on debut he did not let us down. Be it aerial contests against his opposite number, or scraps on the deck against far smaller opponents, the Brit was the star of the opening quarter. Kudos must also go to Harry Luff, who marked well and kicked true despite his many ailments, while Danny Radis claimed what will surely be goal of the year, after executing a wrong-un from the boundary that would have made Adam Zampa proud.

The second quarter however will not live long in the memory, as Reading responded to the early Demons dominance. A noticeable drop in voice and pressure meant a deserved spray was unleashed on the group. Work to do in the final half hour.

With some tactical changes made in the long break, the start to the third quarter was much more like it from the 3's, as they burst out of the blocks with some quick early goals. Having earlier missed a set shot on the angle, Matt Sexton made amends with a lovely run and snap, while Bryce Mulcahy unloaded from distance. They call it the premiership quarter for a reason, and the boys delivered when it mattered most.

Now all that stood between those clad in blue and red, and their rightful spot in the big dance, was 15 minutes of see ball get ball. It definitely wasn't pretty as the final siren grew closer, with Reading making the team earn every ball. Thankfully, a cool head from Radis sealed the game, a moment that's forever etched on Instagram. Honourable mentions must also go to the twin towers down back, Chris Holland and Chris McPherson, who weathered the only storms to hit the Common that day.

Four points claimed. Top spot secured. A trip to Wimbledon locked in with a week to go.

I tell you what life is good in the Super 3's right now. The quest for six-straight lives on!!!
