Rd 7: Demons vs Wimbledon Hawks (Premiership)

Ash 'Ash' Walsh | 21.06.16

Wandsworth Demons 22.18 (150) def. Wimbledon Hawks 2.2 (14)

The Premiership side for the second time in three weeks took on the Hawks to finish a few goals better, running out ultimate 20 goal winners.

The Hawks put up a good fight in the first term, being able to string together some promising passages of play and the Demons kicking inaccurately to go in only a few goals behind at the first break. In the second quarter the Dees midfield got on top with Tez leading the way in his best game of the year - well supported by DJ and Irish Oe who seemed to always have space. Up forward, the quarter belonged to Cooney who slotted a few big ones.

In the second half the flood gates opened and the Hawks just couldn't match the fast ball use and pressure of the Dees, not being able to trouble the scorers for the rest of the game. The back line did a fantastic job rebounding any attacks with Nath going unbeaten in the air and Kev running freely out of the back line to set up multiple attacks.

The master stroke of the second half was sending utility Sammy Drake forward who provided an excellent target and set up multiple goals. The forward line was potent with Rouse kicking seven, Jet kicking a small bag and setting up plenty, as well as Cooney and Andy chipping in for their usual couple. Let's not forget Kiwi slotting a major from 30m out on the angle deep into the last quarter.

Best: Tez, Rouse, Jet, Drake, Oe

The Dove Butcher Play of a the Day goes to Sammy 'the swing man' Drake for his hard work with a splash of poise in the third quarter. After a long searching lead up the middle of the ground and plucking the ball above his head, he wheeled around and switched the ball out wide to then follow up his own work, get the hands back and lace out Big Rouse on the lead, who slid into the kick taking it perfectly on the chest. He of course then went back and slotted one of many.

We now go into the week off and must work hard for a crucial game against the Lions next round. Have a fantastic Glasto weekend.

Goals: Rousey 7, Cooney 5, Jet 4, Andy 2, Kev (Irish) O'Brien 1, Kiwi 1, DJ 1, Harry 1
