Rd 9: Boxy's Believers (Women's comp)

Mitch 'Boxy' Skelly | 14.07.16

Boxy’s Believers were assembled for the day as a group of players that had never played competitive Australian Rules Footy before 2016. Despite this fact some great footy was played throughout the day and everyone put in a big effort to not only play games for the Believers, but also to represent the French – an honour many will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Believers 3.1 (13) def. by South East London Giants 6.2 (38)

The 1st game saw the Believers take on the Giants. Following a win over Crabs Criminals the Giants had their tails up, however it was the Demons who hit the lead early. Katie was a powerhouse in the middle and was well supported by Elbow who made a 2nd appearance for the Demons. The midfield of Damo and B were also influential in surging the ball forwards. In attack the Believers were always a threat with Tessa (Tank) dodging and darting through traffic to kick two goals in the 1st half. The 2nd half was tough against the breeze, however HewieReidy and Jo were always fighting hard to repel any attacks. Play of the day saw Tank pick up the ball at half back, dodge a player, kick to Annie who managed to work the ball back to Tank who finished with her 3rd goal of the game. Whilst the Giants won there were positive signs.

Believers 2.4 (16) def. by Criminals 4.4 (28)

Game 2 was the much anticipated hit out against Crabs Criminals. It was new vs old with both teams keen to win in this battle of mate against mate. Again the first half was super tight with some physical footy and big bumps from Elbow and Crabs. Set some lock down tasks, Bazza did well against Screech and Hewie really played a good game on Socksy in between waxing lyrical about how many Dark Fruits they were going to drink post-match. Following Elbow’s departure Deano stepped up to play ruck and really impressed winning a fair share of the taps. With some key talls missing over the coming weeks this could be the coaching masterstroke of the season... Unfortunately Annie took a tumble and rolled her ankle which allowed Princess to deliver the call she has been waiting all season to use; “Annie are you Ok, are you Ok, are you OK Annie…”, it appeared she was struck by a smooth Criminal. The Criminals may have stolen the win, however the Believers kept the faith and fought it out until the end.

Believers 3.1 (19) def. by Paris Cockerels 2.8 (20)

The 3rd and final match vs the French was another “magnifique” game of football which allowed us to finally pit French Steph Vs Aussie Steph in a classic war of the Steph’s. Following a long day of footy in testing conditions it was a gutsy performance from all sides to keep running until the final siren. With some familiar faces in the French side providing the “coup de grace” to the Believers, it was time to say “bon voyage” and “merci” to our guests, and send an invite to Cam to come and play for the Dee’s next season!

The day was a great success for all involved, well done to the Demons ladies for putting on such a great event, the French for making the trip across the channel and of course the Giants who went away with 3 wins and the trophy.
