Rd 10: Demons vs South East London Giants (Conference)

Shaun 'Yeao' Martin | 22.07.16

Wandsworth Demons 15.12 (102) def. South East London Giants 4.2 (26)

After a number of good wins on the trot, the Magoos went into Saturday with everything on the line against the Giants, who rolled them earlier in the year. A win would see them leapfrog into second place and earn the second chance, a loss would cement third spot. With a strong side in and the girls getting the job done, the Common beamed with sunshine as the game got underway.

Early on the Demons led the way, kicking with a gentle breeze. The midfield got on top early with Kiercey, the Wildebeast Sandy and Tommy Pastaturinoisty controlling the game and giving the opposition nothing.

Some great teamwork from the forward group, especially Dod, Casa and Thommo meant the Demons were able to get to quarter time with a handy lead.

The second quarter saw the Giants come out firing, but every attack was quickly negotiated by the ever reliable defence. Sharpley and Fults simply don't know how to play a bad game as they annihilated their opponents.

The second half saw much of the same as the Demons kicked away, eventually winning by over 10 goals. Yeao (4 goals), Casa (4) and Animal (3) got on the end of everyone's hard work. A brilliant demonstration of teamwork and commitment, proving that we deserve that second spot on the ladder.

Play of the day goes to none other than crowd favourite Bubbles. In his best game of the year, which included ferocious tackling pressure, Bubbles even found time to take a couple of bounces through the midfield before lacing out Animal at full forward. Just as Animal marked it, Bubbles was heard yelling "Festival Bubbles!" while riding an imaginary horse Happy Gilmour style. More of that thanks Bubbles.

3 things we learnt from this game:

  1. Big Sean Walshy can play amazing football. A complete, 4 quarter effort of not only winning the ruck hit outs comprehensively, but a number of clearances and huge tackles. Opposition beware!
  2. Thommo will be missed. In his last game for the Demons. The great man was his usual tough, in and under stalwart who snuck forward to hit the scoreboard. A true demon, the club is better for having you around!
  3. This team can play some seriously good football. On Saturday a clinic was on show as to what is achievable if everyone's in together.

Let's get around each other for a HUGE weekend ahead! Go Demons!

Goals: Yeao 4, Casa 4, Animal 3, Thommo 2, Dod 1, Candy 1

Best players: Walshy, Fults, Tommy P, Casa, NZ Ritchie, Bubbles
