Friendly: Demons vs Oxbridge (Women)

Coach Skelly | 16.03.17

The "She-Dee's" started the 2017 season with a lovely day out in the historic University city of Cambridge to play a combined Cambridge and Oxford side... Oxbridge. The match was a curtain raiser for the 97th annual men's varsity match between the 2, as such there was great interest in the game and many handsome chaps spectating in their finest blazer and tie combo's.

With a solid turnout for both sides we were able to extend from 12 per side to 14 per side, which provided the perfect opportunity for some of our new players to get some solid game time. There were some pre match nerves with more than half of the players on debut, but as soon as the game started it looked like some of the Demon's have been playing their whole lives!

Bridget started in the ruck against an Oxford player that stood head and shoulder over anyone else on the park, which proved a real challenged early on. To her credit Bridgey was able to work her way into the game and by the last quarter had the better of her opponent. Not only winning many taps, but also kicking the Demons first goal of the day. Joining her in the middle were Gaby, Macca and Maddy who were a perfect combination of in and under strength with outside run and carry.

The 2nd Dee's goal of the day was scored by Lisa who got on the end of some nice team play and kicked a soccer goal from the square to level the scores. From the get go we had looked the better football team with some great link up play throughout the midfield allowing us to pump the ball inside our forward 50 time and time again. It shows that all the hard work at training is paying off when we see really smart decisions with the footy.

Oxbridge's key forward was a threat all day, kicking 2 top draw goals and setting up another. It took some hard work from Rose and then Greg to shut her down, as well as some forceful tackling from Noodles in the final quarter with the game on the line.

Down by 2 points early in the last quarter the ball was in Macca's hands who slotted the goal that put the Dee's in front. She had another chance to seel the game which fell agonisingly short, however we managed to hang on for a 5 point win in a "great" first up hit out.

Final Score
Oxbridge 3.1
Wandsworth 3.6

Goals - Bridget A, Lisa E, Brit "Macca"
Best Players - Bridget A, Gaby D, Maddy M, Brit "Macca" (there were plenty more names that could have been on this list, however our starting midfield were all on debut and set the tone from the outset - well done!)
