RD1 '17: Demons vs Wildcats (W. Conf)

Mitch "Boxy" Skelly | 11.05.17

Clapham Demons 2.3 (15) def by West London Wildcats 3.2 (20)

The 2017 season was kicked off in fine style with the first game of the inaugural AFL London women’s Conference division between the newly formed West London Wildcat’s and a 2nd women’s side for the mighty Demons. Credit to both clubs for putting out a full complement of 18 and a 6 player bench for round 1, women’s footy is booming and it is a great sign for the league.

There were some pre game nerves with most players on debut, however it was the Dee’s who got off to the better start. Elko, Connos and Bridgey were moving the ball forward, meanwhile M.C. aka "The Glove" was playing a great lock down role on the Wildcats midfield gun and living up to her reputation as the best tagger in the business. When we got the ball forward Vicky and Sticky across half forward were looking dangerous picking up the crumbs and Ryano was proving to be a strong target. The first goal of the season came from some gutsy play by Sticky who put her head over the footy and almost had it kicked off, the resulting free kick fell short of the goals but club legend Screech was on hand to soccer it through.

During the 2nd quarter the Cat’s started to get more of the footy and put our backline under pressure, it was now time for Trucker to start getting more involved and show us what she is capable of. Coota marshalled the troops well, French Steph and Juicy Lucy were playing tough defensive footy and things were looking good. The wildcats did manage to snare a goal, however this was answered by Ryano who pinched one back.

During the 2nd half Ri found more space on the wings and was also excellent in defence – at one point she even had the opposition ruck running backwards with the ball as she chased her away! The game was tight all day long with never more than a goal in it. We were down by 7 points, then 6 with everyone working their socks off to get 1 more goal. With the game in its last minute Bridgey made a big run and there was some great link up play to get her free 45 out from goal. She unloaded a huge torpedo which look to be going through only for the cruellest of bounces to send the footy into the post.

Had the game been tied up it would have been a fitting result to a great match, and we should look to future matches with optimism after a strong start to the season.

Best players: Bridgey Aughton, Trucker, Ri, MC, Connos
Goals: Screech, Ryano
