RD5 '17: Demons vs Swans (Conf)

Anthony White | 08.06.17

Clapham Demons 16.15 (111) def London Swans 0.3 (3)

Round 5 saw the conference men take on the London Swans in what loomed as a danger game for the Dees, particularly considering our patchy form to date and the weary heads from the Epsom Derby! If we could somehow transfer the form shown by the boys at the Derby on to the football field, I knew we would be in for a big day!

Some big inclusions this week provided a much more balanced side, and for the first time this season we managed to play the game on our terms. The tone was set in the midfield with Harvey Biggs providing first use to our midfield led by Jeffers, Will Andrew and Jarell. From the opening bounce we took control, winning the contested ball, and while a little inaccurate, we managed to kick 4 goals 6, and keeping Swannies scoreless going into the first break.

Speaking of big inclusions, they don't come much bigger than the big fella himself, 'The G Train', Glenn. From the bright lights of the AFL to a four-time Port Moresby Table Tennis (B grade) Open finalist, the big man made his presence felt, forming a dangerous duo working alongside Trav. These inclusions resulted in a much more dangerous looking forward line, a good sign for weeks to come.

The first term really set the standard for the day and we looked like a new team compared to the previous few weeks. Our half back line led by Pup, Fults and Ki repelled every Swans attack, and set up a number of coast to coast goals.

In the end the Swannies were no match as we were able to control the game, running out eventual winners, kicking 16 goals 15 and the most pleasing aspect, we were able to hold the Swannies goalless for the match, restricting them to just 3 behinds.

A great four quarter performance, and a step in the right direction. Every player contributed in what was a great team effort, but special mention to Jeffers, Jarell and Fintan who were able to get the job done both in the midfield and up forward. Pup for his leadership and control down back and extra special mention to our rest of the world players who needed to run out the whole game as we were down on personnel. All ROW's played crucial roles, so great work to Turk, Tank, Drew and Joe Lee.

Finally, a big thank you to Dom who helped out on the day running the messages and water.

We now look forward to 'The Big Freeze on the C' next Saturday as we face the benchmark of the competition, the Shepherds Bush Raiders.
