RD9 '17: Demons vs Magpies (W.Conf)

Mitch Skelly | 13.07.17

Demons 6.7 (43) def. Magpies 0.1 (1)

The Demons travelled SW15 like a surging sea of colour and happiness on Saturday to take on the Putney Magpies. It was a wonderful sight to see the traditional Blue and Red accompanied with all the colours of the rainbow as the club embraced Rainbow round and the London Pride weekend.

With a bye for the premiership team there must have been 35 or more She-Dees in attendance to play or watch the game, with Becks putting those not playing through an intense running session. Unfortunately Putney were a few short, however this allowed us to offer them some players and play 15 per side game and get more Dee's a run - a good result for footy. Thanks to Princess, Macca, Royesy, Steph G, Nat, Amy T and Ri who all filled in for the Pies.

From the outset the Demons looked the more polished team in a competitive game of footy. Both teams had some really handy players on the park, however it was the excellent team work of the Dees and the ability to stick to our structures that allowed us to take charge. The first quarter was a good one for our forwards, Jenna, Linda and Fizzy all looked dangerous with 1 goal each to Linda and Fizz. The backline play of Mickey and Nic D was sensational, Mickey at one stage beating 3 opponents to win the ball and clear it from danger. The crowd went nuts in the 2nd term after Arnie slotted a goal (possibly her first?) and Pinks kicked an absolute ripper, her first of the season and our 5th goal of the game.

The biggest concerns at half time were Yeao running messages in nothing but shorts and being stung by a Bee, combined with Noodles running water commando after an earlier incident with a she-wee left her with a shortage of dry clothing.

As the match went on the fitness and determination of Hammer and Steve, combined with the smart footy of Connos, saw the midfield in control of proceeding. Sarah won plenty of taps and was immense in building "the wall".

A second goal to Linda and a first career goal to Steve were the icing on the cake for a great day of footy and fun. On the field the most pleasing element of the day was to see all 25 Demons that played in the match make a solid contribution. Off the field it was a typical Demons atmosphere - fun, inclusive and supportive. With a win against the Swans this week conference can finish second and get a double chance - lets make that happen!

Goals - 2 Linda, 1 Steve, Fizzy, Pinks, Arnie
