Rd 3: Demons vs Lions (Premiership)

Ash Walsh | 18.05.16

Wandsworth Demons 12.10 (82) def. North London Lions 6.7 (43)

Going up against last year’s premiers was always going to be tough, but after a slow start the boys fought back to run out six goal winners.

The Demons were caught napping in the first quarter, with the Lions mid field running rampant delivering dangerous footy to their forwards who kicked accurately into a strong breeze – leading at the first break. The boys adjusted in the second term, being first to the footy and putting pressure back on the Lions mid field who had it easy early on. Nath and Nobby were brilliant not only in the second term, but all day, repelling any long balls that came in and turning defence into attack with help from the dangerous Tex Walker

The third term was relatively even with the Dees taking the honours ever so slightly - the Lions held strong into the breeze to set up what looked like was going to be an epic last quarter showdown. It wasn’t to be however, with the Dees getting on top led by big Nic Nat in the ruck, Pauly O fisting anything that even looked like coming into the Lions fifty and Cooney flicking the show time switch slotting two majors of his own, to kick away from the Lions and put the game beyond doubt half way through the quarter to notch up an important win for the season. Credit must go to the non-aussies as to why we won the game – they were the difference in the end and were brilliant. Matty Goodman and Paul O’Leary had break out games for the club, well done boys!

This week’s Aussie Man with a Van Play of the Day went to Skinny Ash and Cooney for their brilliant combined effort goal in the last quarter. Picture this, a long ball comes in deep into the forward pocket – Cooney two on one at this stage – spills out towards the boundary, he somehow keeps it alive and hears a voice behind him, slaps the ball between his legs straight into the oncoming Pitto who dodgers around a would be defender to slot a great checkside goal. Classic Pitto then put on a fitting celebration for the admiring crowd.

We take on Putney down at Peckham again this weekend and look forward to seeing you there.

Goals: Cooney 3, Chiz 3, Pitto 2, Jet 2, DJ 1, Rousey 1
