Finals Week 1 - Women's Conference - Dee's v Wildcats

Matt Sexton | 29.07.22

As I write this recap, it feels like a time to take stock of the season we have just had.

Round 1 we played against the Hawks, more than half the team hadn't played a single game of AFL before. Coming into finals the improvement I had seen the girls make was genuinely incredible.

Some personal highlights include watching Lee develop game on game, seeing something click with Mel B and now having a ball hunting Shemon in our mid/fwd line and seeing everybody in good spirits at the end of every game, win or lose.

My favourite moment of the season was watching Hannah slot a goal from an impossible angle and seeing every single girl get over and celebrate with her. That's what I love about footy.

The final was win or lose. The first quarter was a stalemate with the demons putting 1 point on the board but we took the positive away that the ball lived in our 50 the whole time.

The second quarter we came out strong again, we kept it in our half but unfortunately couldn't get a goal. We put 4 points and set ourselves up for a great second half.

The second half we were in control but a small period of time in our defensive 50 led to a Wildcats goal. Unfortunately this singular goal ended up being the defining moment in the game and Wildcats took the win away by a measly couple of points!

I can take solace in knowing that we were the better team in the game, our pressure was phenomenal but in the world of sports, sometimes the cards don't fall your way.

As coach I could not be prouder of what we have built this year. We will take a break to drown our sorrows but come back through pre-season with an incredible group of girls ready to take what is ours, the 2023 Grand Final.
