Rd 1: Demons vs Wildcats (Premiership)

Frank Caldow | 05.05.16

Demons 11.4 (70) def. Wildcats 8.5 (53)

The Premiership team got off to an ideal start to the 2016 season with a fighting victory against rivals West London Wildcats.

Kicking with the breeze in the first term, we got away to a two goal lead which probably deserved to be four considering we dominated the first two thirds of the quarter. Second quarter started much the same with the Demons controlling possession for the first part, which allowed us to control the momentum. Wests were able to take a little advantage of the breeze late in the quarter but we held a narrow lead going into half time. After the main break we again controlled the bulk of the play but couldn't put the Wildcats away on the scoreboard. Going into the last quarter we managed to kick the first goal, before Wests pressed forward for about 15 minutes of football in their forward half, yet they were unable to kick multiple goals - the ability of our midfielders clogged up space in the back 50. After a fast break, co-captain Adam Jeffery kicked the sealing goal with about three minutes left, getting us a much deserved four points, exactly the start we wanted.

Kev O'Brien had a crucial job on Lloyd and managed to kick four goals up forward whist limiting his ability to hurt us out of defence. Cam 'Red' Perry was pure class through the midfield. He was hard at the contest, near impossible to take down, hit targets and had first rate composure. Alex Watson was good in the ruck and around the ground. He's learning more with every game, starting to take strong marks and also starting to win ball at ground level, an excellent trait for a man of his size. Jarrod Sandells provided damaging rebounding run and carry from defensive 50. Was very important throughout the match. Ash Walsh was good, playing predominantly a sweeping role through the midfield. Hit targets throughout the game and provided a steady head late in the game.

Next match is against the Swans on May 7th. See you all there!
