SEMI '17: Demons vs Lions (W.Prem)

Mitch Skelly | 27.07.17

Demons 9.10 (64) def. Lions 0.0 (0)

I'm not sure if it's due to never playing in the wet, or nobody telling the She Dee's how hard it is meant to be, but the weekends qualifying final saw some incredibly clean and crisp footy with a water logged footy, and most importantly a birth in the women's premiership grand finale.

Not for the first (and hopefully not the last) time in 2017 the Dee's got off to the perfect start. Crofty taps to Onora, Onora kicks to Beth, Beth kicks to Tess, Tess handballs to Pudge, Pudge slots a goal on the run from the boundary line... within 30 seconds we've put a goal on the board and started exactly how we wanted. The first quarter continued much the same way, Trucker was everywhere and played an awesome game, Pudge and Linda were dominant up forward and had great support from Beth, Nom and Tessa as usual.

The game continued in much the same way for the 2nd quarter, the Demons putting on more goals and keeping the Lions scoreless. Anything that did cross the centre line was mopped up by Gaby, Becks, Maddy or Nic D and sent straight back where it came from. Socksy bobbed up with a goal and Auto also provided another strong target with Noodles and Macca applying the tackle pressure.

After half time the conditions only got worse, however the inside work of B to get the ball forward was impressive, and the team managed to continually link up play with clean use of the water logged footy. Hammer, Ri and Steve were playing the wings to perfection and Gab was getting more and more footy.

In the 4th term we managed to mix things up a bit and still kick goals in the slippery conditions. I know I'm going to be buying a pair of Linda's magic gloves after she again marked strong and kicked her 4th goal. Our backline players Snakesy, Damo and Tinni were rarely troubled during the game and were probably looking forward to warming up with a few "tinnies" in the red and blue terrace, however never once did they lose focus of the task at hand and stop playing disciplined footy.

As every coach will say "the job is only half done" and winning by 10 goals this week means nothing on August the 5th when the siren blows at Clapham Common. It’s an exciting time to be a Demon, and it's been an awesome season so far, but let's not leave any stone unturned as we seek premiership glory and life long memories.

Goals: Linda 4, Pudge 3, Socksy 1, MC 1
Best: Pudge, Trucker, Gab, Linda, MC, B
